The announcement was made on 15 July 2021 during a virtual press conference at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland. The European nation has been one of the main active drivers behind the formation of ACT accelerator since the COVID outbreak. Earlier, Germany had extended its support by investing EUR 100m (US$ 117m) for the COVAX pillar of the ACT-Accelerator, all of which was to support low-and-middle income countries. Later, the World Health Organisation signed an agreement with Germany under WHO Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan for COVID-19.

As per the sources, the COVAX Facility has now delivered life-saving vaccines to over 100 economies since making its first international delivery to Ghana on 24 February 2021. So far, more than 38 million doses of vaccines from manufacturers AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech and Serum Institute of India (SII) have now been delivered, including 61 economies eligible for vaccines through the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment.

COVAX aimed to supply vaccines to all participating economies that had requested vaccines, in the first half of 2021, despite few delays in planned deliveries for March and April (more info is available on https://www.who.int/news/item/08-04-2021-covax-reaches-over-100-economies-42-days-after-first-international-delivery).

Meanwhile, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Germany's valuable contribution, its constant support and cohesive actions towards making the world a better place to live. During Q&A session, the chief raised a threshold over sharing of raw data on the origination of SARS-CoV-2 and reiterated WHO's consistent efforts in convincing China for being transparent, open and supportive on sharing information and data for a fair and clean judgement. He asserted that the world owes a great debt to the lost lives due to pandemic and  it was our responsibility to know the actual root and cause of the suffering.

Talking over the recent WHO Emergency Committee's stand on COVID, Dr. Tedros, clearly mentioned that the committee has expressed its concern on pandemic being mischaracterized as coming to an end but the reality seemed completely different. He stated that the committee was deeply concerned regarding the emergence of new global challenges in the wake of the spread of newly mutated variants worldwide that could be more dangerous and lethal compared to the current ones.

As of now 188, 332, 972 confirmed COVID-19 cases including 4, 063, 453 deaths have been reported worldwide.
